Notes from “The Art of Communicating” - Thich Nhat Hahn…

Consider that being able to effectively communicate does not mean that you will be able to communicate effectively...

You and your ability to communicate doesn’t always manifest as effective when communicating with others who create barriers to their own ability to communicate with you.

  • Consume with mindfulness
  • Letting go of judgement, observing the breath.
  • Conversation is a source of nourishment
  • What a person says may be full of toxins
  • Be aware of mindfulness of speaking and mindfulness of hearing.
  • Protect yourself with the energy of compassion
  • Without mindfulness we may take in things that are toxic to our senses
  • Communicate in a way that solidifies the peace and compassion in ourselves and bring joy to others.
  • In a relationship we are nourishment for each other.
  • Everything (love, hate, suffering), needs “food” to continue.
  • When we find the sources of nourishment for our suffering we can cut off its supply.
  • Practicing loving communication can nourish our loved ones.
  • The mind is the most fundamental instrument for communication.
  • If our mind is blocked, there is no device that will make up for the inability to communicate with ourselves and others.
  • The purpose of our devices is to give us the opportunity to communicate with compassion.
  • Breathing in, I am aware of my body.
  • Breathing out, I release all the tension in my body.
